New on Sports Illustrated: Report: 49ers Trade Up for No. 3 Draft Pick, Dolphins Move Back Up To No. 6 After Deal with Eagles

Dolphins will now have the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and several future picks.

The Dolphins have agreed to trade the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft to the 49ers in exchange for the No. 12 pick,

a 2022 third-round pick and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. 

The 2021 third-round pick is San Francisco's compensatory pick for Robert Salah's hiring, according to ESPN. Salah is the former defensive coordinator for the 49ers. 

The Dolphins-49ers swap in draft selection led other NFL teams to make moves. Shortly after the deal, the Eagles traded their No. 6 pick in the draft to the Dolphins for the No. 12 pick and a 2022 first-round pick, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

After the shakeup, the Dolphins are back in the top six draft picks in the NFL Draft. The Eagles will have an extra first-round pick in 2022 and could potentially have three first-round picks in 2022, if the Carson Wentz pick from the Colts turns into a first-rounder, according to Schefter.

The 2022 first-round pick that the Dolphins are sending to the Eagles belongs to Miami – it is not the pick they acquired from the 49ers. The Eagles have full ownership of the Dolphins' original first-round pick in 2022. 

According to Schefter, the 49ers are holding on to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and have no plans to trade him. Garoppolo has a no-trade clause in his contract.

"Jimmy is here to stay," Schefter reported. "He's our guy this year."

Garoppolo, who only played in six games last season due to high ankle sprain injuries, threw for 1,096 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. However, in the 49ers' 2019 Super Bowl run, he threw for 3,978 yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. 

With the 49ers moving up in the draft, the franchise could look to draft their quarterback of the future. Clemson's Trevor Lawrence is projected as the No. 1 pick to the Jaguars. BYU's Zach Wilson, North Dakota State's Trey Lance and Ohio State's Justin Fields could be available to be selected by the 49ers. 

In Sports Illustrated's latest Mock Draft by Albert Breer, Wilson is projected as the second quarterback off of the board followed by Fields then Lance.

The NFL Draft will take place from April 29 to May 1. 

The Dolphins are coming off a 10–6 season. The 49ers finished the year 6–10.
